Rhetorical Grammar: Grammatical Choices, Rhetorical EffecsJuly 2, 2010
At first I feared this book was just another grammar reference, and at $40 I expected more. I need not have worried. Rhetorical Grammar explains how the structure of sentences may affect readers. The authors explain how a writer's choices regarding word placement, phrasing, etc., may add impact and rhythm. I've not yet (more…)
BooklifeJune 30, 2010
Just finished reading Booklife: Strategies and Survival Tips for the 21st-Century Writer by Jeff Vandemeer. The book offers great insights, especially relating to the social network sites. An opportunity to guest blog came my way right after I read Vandermeer’s material, so I jumped at the chance. But some of his (more…)
Making LemonadeJune 19, 2010
Just finished Make Lemonade. I had never read anything by Virginia Wolfe, and this was a very different kind of writing with lines broken into phrases in a quite conversational manner. It's the story of a 14-year-old who babysits 2-year-old Jeremy and baby Jilly for a 17-year-old single mother named Jolly. But (more…)

The author suffered much but in the suffering found God's scandalous love, hence the title. Read my review on amazon.com. If you've ever suffered physical, mental (more…)

Spoken from the HeartJune 11, 2010
I’m enjoying Spoken from the Heart by Laura Bush because of the insight it gives me into world events. I better understand the history of the nation of Afghanistan and why Laura has chosen to support the women there. She refers to “the damage wrought by the vicious gender apartheid of (more…)
Current ReadingJune 7, 2010
I'm about halfway through Spoken from the Heart by Laura Bush. For the most part I'm enjoying catching a glimpse of what life was like for a First Lady. Sometimes I would prefer a little less detail. I don't really need to know who sang at the Inaugural Prayer Service, who went along to (more…)
Current ReadingJune 3, 2010
The months have sped by, and I’ve fallen behind in posting to my blog. I hope to change and post at least weekly if not more frequently. Today I’ll bring you up to date on my reading.
Last week I finished Simply Speaking by Peggy Noonan, which I believe has (more…) |
