If you’ve ever wondered what goes on behind the closed doors of the White House, here’s your chance to find out. Laura Bush truly speaks from her heart about the eight years she lived there as First Lady. You feel the weight of a pressing schedule as she represents her country around the world. I did not know how much First Ladies do. You also feel her anguish over unkind criticisms made about her and her husband.
The opening chapters tell of life growing up in a small Texas town and how an unfortunate accident when she was driving took the life of a friend. I loved the pages of photos, including Jenna’s wedding picture, taken on the family ranch with a sunset for a backdrop.
On these pages we learn of Laura’s tireless support of the women of Afghanistan, who lost the right to vote and other freedoms when the Taliban took over the country. Her determination to fight breast cancer, especially in countries with high rates of the disease. Her work to support teachers and literacy. Her organization of National Book Festivals. And the list goes on.
While now and then I would have preferred less detailed lists of names and descriptions, they all contribute to showing me what an influential and compassionate woman Laura Bush has become. At 400+ pages, you won’t read the book in an afternoon, but it’s well worth the time spent.
The book includes a detailed index of people, conferences and more. Told chronologically, it ends with the Bushs’ return to their Prairie Chapel Ranch. May they feel deep satisfaction at what they’ve accomplished as they ride off into the sunset.
